Pvt. John Middleton Hester, Co. D, 41st Alabama Infantry…

John Middleton Hester

John Middleton was born in Pickens County, Alabama about 2 miles south of Coalfire. He was a blacksmith and farmer like his father before him. He enlisted in Company D of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment at Pickensville, Alabama on the 27 March 1862 by H. Talbird. He did his school of the soldier in Tuscaloosa near the University of Alabama.
After their school of the soldier the 41st was sent to Tennessee. On Oct. 10, 1862, John Middleton was chosen to be apart of the Color Guard of the Regiment, this was a very big honor, to be selected for the Color Guard a soldier had to show steadfastness and bravery in battle.
On 24 March 1863 he was appointed to the special services as a teamster, a few days later he was given the position of Division Wagoneer, by order of Gen. John C. Brickinridge.
He was sent to Vicksburg, Miss. with a supply wagon train. John Middleton was it Vicksburg during the 47 day siege. After Vicksburg fell he was paroled and sent to Demoplis, Alabama, and from there I think he went home to Coalfire.
Military records show him back with the 41st in January, as he got $88.00 back pay from May 1, 1863 to December 31, 1863.
I believe he is with the 41st as it goes to Virginia to be apart of the Army of Northern Virginia.
The next military records on him shows him on a roll of prisoner war in Columbus, Miss. In May of 1865. He is paroled there on May 19, 1865. Now how he got to Columbus I’m not sure, but I think he was sent back to Alabama or Mississippi to get supplies. Because the Army of Northern Virginia did have any food for soldiers or animals.
After the war he returned to his home in Coalfire, married Rebecca Wilkins and they had five children.
I am proud to say John Middleton Hester is my Great-great-grandfather. It is an honor to me to be apart of this Confederate soldiers family….Daniel E. Hall

Thanks to Danny Hall, my nephew who wrote the article….This is a reprint from “Rebel Yell”, Grizz’s Corner, published by Southern Press, Gordo, Al….Thanks to both for this story reprint…My great-grandfather…

Monday Night Football Spectators…

Two grandsons and their dates spent some time at The AT&T Cowboy stadium on Oct 27th. You might recall that is the Monday night that The Redskins scalped the Cowboys. Like me, both of the grandsons are died in the wool Cowboy fans and them losing is bad, real bad, especially to the dad barn Redskins. But the dislike of the Redskins aside, both boys and their girlfriends had wonderful time. One of the grandson’s girl friends sister is a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader and I guess they got a grand tour. So they had all kind of fun, including both boys kicking several field goals from the twenty yard line. They made them or most of them anyway.. ….. Now that’s a way to spend a Monday night, win or lose, I am sure that was a fun time.

The Color of Autumn…

This past weekend we once again headed north into the tall mountains of  Northern New Mexico, getting up over 8000 feet to enjoy the changing color of the Aspens in the forest. And once again, we MISSED it…..Almost all the leaves were history, becoming mulch for the forest, bedding for the animals, cover for the ants and spiders and what ever else old worn out leaves do when leaving their tree homes. There were a few old hangers on in the lower elevations, where the cold spells had not been so bad, just waiting on the Hester’s to make it up that way, and they were yellow and pretty. And we appreciated that. All along the streams in the lower elevations, there were Cottonwood’s still changing and they were a beautiful yellow…..  Missing the Aspen was bad but still it was a very nice trip….. We went down through Fenton Lake State Park where bunches of fishermen, ladies and children were casting for some trout. It looked like they were having fun. Highway 126 from Cuba over to Highway 4 is mostly gravel, so we did not break any speed records. But at that slow speed it gives one a chance to appreciate the real beauty of that drive. Some of the prettiest timber a fellow could ever hope to see. My uncles and my dad (Alabama folks) would have loved to have had a saw mill up in that stand of timber, I’m sure. I thought of some of them on that trip. But you know what I was really disappointed about. There were signs all through there telling the drivers to watch out for deer and elk, and I never saw a one, not a single one. That’s terrible…Well, it was a good outing and we enjoyed our meal at Bruno’s in Cuba, so all was not lost….Maybe next year I can go and get some pictures….On another subject, I once thought that when I get a good camera “I am going to have all these pictures to share”…Now that I have a good camera, I can’t remember to bring it on my trips…..What does that tell you?….Ok, ok, just keep it to yourself….

The “New” Thompson’s Water Seal……

After years of treating my fence with Thompson’s Water Seal, it appears now that I will have to go another direction. I used to use my weed sprayer, load up the Thompson’s and spray away. Now, it’s that Elmer’s glue look alike stuff that come out of the weed sprayer in little beads, about the size of bb shots. Some of it runs, most of it globs. The lady who answered the phone at Thompson’s said that the VOC, whoever the heck that is, would not let them continue with the old formula. I can get me a high volume spray gun and the new stuff will work fine, she says. Only thing, I don’t want to buy a high volume spray gun. I want to use my weed sprayer. You say, why not roll it on, Mr. Hester….and I say, there is a chain link fence guarding the wood fence that will not allow this old fat boy in between them to roll. And any step ladder high enough to do the job to reach over to roll it,  is also of major concern to the fat boy. Does anyone know of a product, similar to Thompson’s that will work in a weed sprayer? If so, please hit comments at the bottom of this post and let me know it’s name. I sure would appreciate it.

Well, congratulations to Miss St football team….Who would have thought it?…And Ole Miss no. 3 in the nation, both teams at 6 – 0 and playing in the SEC. I said on facebook that I wondered about the conditions down in hell, that maybe it had not frozen over, but I was sure it had frosted…..Strange year…and you know what, it is kind of refreshing…What else can happen?

Albuquerque Drinking Fuel, uh, I Mean.. Water?

The USAF promised to take care of the fuel in our drinking water aquifer, once, twice, three times….I don’t know for sure how many times they have promised to start the clean up. I’m hearing the jet fuel is less than a mile from one of the Albuquerque drinking water wells….Now, it is for sure, they say, that the clean up will get started in 2015…..We can put men on the moon, let men live in a space station for months, resupplying them on a routine basis, harness the atom, build nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, build and fly pilotless aircraft that deliver bombs to targets miles away, cameras that can spy on its citizens from 17 miles up, and I don’t know what all else….but we cannot clean up underground water….our drinking water….they cannot, I repeat they, that is the cotton picking United States Air Force, cannot clean up a fuel spill under Kirtland Air Force Base. Maybe up to 24 million gallons of jet fuel, just running around underground, free  for the taking, refined and ready to go, certified and made to Air Force specs, just laying there waiting to be injected into some high flying jet, well, or maybe some child’s belly…which ever comes first….Does the Air Force care?….I don’t reckon….Finish this tour of duty and move on, huh? That seems to be the feeling. Oh, where is Obama playing golf today? Or better, where is the base commander playing?… Pres, if you are coming to Albuquerque in the future, you might want to bring bottled water……Or crack the whip….

Oryx gazella

Did you know that we had Oryx in New Mexico? There are some hunts coming up in January and February of 2015. If you are interested, please call 1-888-248-6866 for further information. They were introduced into New Mexico at White Sands Missile Range and surrounding area in 1969. They brought in 93 animals. They adapted well…. They started hunting them in 1974 and now they number about 3000 animals. They can weigh up to 450 pounds with an average 34 inch horn. There are hunts on White Sands Missile Range but there are some outfitters who have some hunts also. Google the Oryx in New Mexico and you will get several hits. Again….1-888-248-6866 for more info..

Mexican Invasion

I can read the newspaper and get so upset that sometimes I just do not want to read one. Did you know that on May 5, 2010 Mexicans invaded the Live Oaks High School in Morgan City, California and won. That day American kids that were wearing t-shirts with the American flag had to turn them inside out to not show the American flag for their own safety. Can you believe that. In America, at an American run high school, financed by the American people. Then yesterday, three judges ruled that was the right thing for the school officials to do in order to protect the children. Ruled the right thing to do? That is wrong, all wrong, and I am so up set with that decision. What is wrong with America? The dream act seems to be about Mexico taking over America by sending millions upon millions into our country and little by little taking over. How else could a ruling like that come about. Where is the back bone of the American people in California? I should not be the only one upset over this ruling…Folks, something is bad wrong in America…I hope we soon wake up…..

Dallas Cowboys….

Now I have kind of held off on doing a great deal of writing on the football season, college or pro, leaving that to the people in the know. I have a little head knowledge about the sport, but a lot of heart involved in the sport. Alabama, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Arizona, Wisconsin and a few other colleges from time to time….For pro, it’s all about the Dallas Cowboys…Did you see them last weekend?…Down 21 points and came back! Now, folks, that’s something to write about…Maybe, just maybe, this will be their year…I sure hope so….Romo does not have a lot of time left, does he? Did you notice that he even ran the ball for a first down once? He used to do that a lot…..Well, we all slow down and understand that..And that’s ok Tony, ok for you not to run, just don’t do dumb, ok, just don’t do  D U M B…Thanks
