New Mexico Yards, Rocks/Grass

By Pete, August 31, 2009 3:37 p08

I have received some comments on homes in New Mexico having rocks in their yards and the question asked as to why…. Not every home has rocks, but we all have one problem…water shortage…Did you know that much of the water flowing through New Mexico in the Rio Grande River and the Pecos River belong to Texas… We can keep our share only…And once they sued us, big time, for not releasing a sufficient amount of water, water they believed we owed them…And I guess we did as the Supreme Court (or some higher power than the States of New Mexico and Texas) agreed that we must repay the water to them…That was really tough in some of the dry years and our reservoirs were really low. Also, the water table has been losing water for some time now. We have Texas paid for the old water and the last two years we have had good snow run off and that has helped…We are told to cut back on watering our yards to conserve water and a lot of us have rocks in our yards instead of grass. I have rocks front and on the sides and partial rocks in the back. I have a small area in the back, roughly 100′ long and approximately 25′ wide, but it is a z shape….That is my grass and I enjoy it….Water is very precious here and we all recognize that fact..There are a few that require a water patrol who issue warning and fines for abusing water usage…So we try to conserve water anyway we can…Albuquerque gets about 10 inches of rain fall per year..We get a snow or two per year in the valley…the mountains gets enough rain and snow to support beautiful pine and fur trees… and aspen up above 8000 feet…The peak of the Sandia Mountains is 10,683 feet..they get lots of rain up there…The Rio Grande River is at 4900 feet elevation and my house on the west side is  5653 feet, but we don’t get much rain at the lower levels..Thats probably more than you wanted to know about “rocks in New Mexico yards”, but thats why we have them….

Autumn in the Air

The mornings are so cool anymore that it is hard to leave a door open until on up in the morning. The grass is slowing down on it growth….Last week I only mowed about 1/2 of a 40 gallon bag of clippings from the same area that in the summer produced over a bag of clippings. Spring, summer and fall are my times of year…I tolerate winter just to get to spring again…Cold weather is not good for me…snow is not good for me…Well, I am getting ahead of myself….I will talk about the ills of winter later…For now, let’s enjoy Autumn…Nice, huh? By the way, don’t forget my downloads…I will be adding another chapter in a couple of days…Just click on the word download and they will jump up on you screen..Each Chapter is only a few pages which you can read on line or download to your computer….Thanks for reading them..

California/Texas Little League

By Pete, August 28, 2009 3:37 p08

Saturday showdown, huh?….I thought we might see that…Both those teams are good and you watch them both and love them both and it is a shame that one has to lose….You know what I am going to do….I am not going to pick a winner…I am going to let those young men play the game and I am going to sit back and just enjoy watching two great teams play….You know what else….those are the best two teams in America…You just have to love them both, Amen?….San Antonio,Texas and Chula Vista,California little league players and managers, we salute you and thank you for your efforts…You are both winners for sure……

Cuba/Governor Richardson Visit

By Pete, August 27, 2009 3:37 p08

Well, Bill is at it again, traveling all over, Cuba this time, but not representing the good old U S of A. No sir, he is over there representing New Mexico Agricultural products; green Chilies, peanuts, pecans and some other stuff. We have lots of beef too, Governor, and dairy products….Have you thought about pushing tumbleweeds, Sir? You know they are plentiful and they burn with a tremendous BTU…We could roll and package them as fire logs, etc…Does it get cold in Cuba?…Anyway, keep up the good work Bill and are you going to bring back a few cigars???…You might let us know where we can pick one of them up…

Healthcare

Well, I have stayed away from this subject for several reasons….One, it is so touchy  with most people, as we all have strong feeling about this…I want everyone to have healthcare, I really do, but I don”t want to pay for everybody’s….Do you? We cannot afford to have our government pay for all to have healthcare either…Is there something half way that we can afford? I don’t know of anything….Forcing all the employers to provide healthcare is also scary as this could force the smaller companies out of business and we don’t want that either…There just “ain’t no easy button” to handle this…I always thought it was going along pretty good before…Reckon what happened?….You might send me your ideas as I certainly don’t have any good answers, or better yet, send them to Mr. Obama… he could really use them, right?…..

Texas/California Little League Game

By Pete, August 26, 2009 3:37 p08

The boys from Texas surprised me, even though I knew they were a good team and had watched them play, I thought Chula Vista would over power San Antonio….So what do I know. I was impressed with the little pitcher from Texas who came in and finished the game off…He and the catcher were so cool, the manager came out and asked them, “how do you want to pitch to this guy” on one more of the heavy hitters from Chula Vista. “Throw him the heater” they both said. You gotta love it, one; the manager giving them a choice and two; the players deciding to go right at the batter….You know what, I think we may see these two teams play again….No matter which one wins, I love it…what a series…

Neighborhood Improvements

By Pete, August 25, 2009 3:37 p08

Do you need to get something done in your neighborhood? Well, here’s the deal, pickle…First, get several of the mothers involved…If you cannot get mothers involved, even if it is men doing work, forget about it……You cannot do anything without the mothers ok….you can, but it will be a half-hearted, half-done and an incomplete effort…There is something in all of us that respond to mothers…When they say, do it, “we get ‘er done” and we do it to please the ladies and if it ain’t right, well, it has to be corrected so we do it over…That may be a little overstated, but not much…Mothers were generally the ones to paddle our butts when we didn’t do things right and I believe that we carry that over to our adult life…Right ladies…well, kind’a, huh?…let me know if I didn’t say it right and I will rewrite it…..I’m serious….

Lil League World Series

I hope you guys enjoy watching these kids play baseball as much as I do. I watched Japan today, well, first let me say one has to like all of them, they are all special, and then let me add that the little 4′7″ short stop for Japan is really special….First thing, he stopped a hot grounder and then zipped the ball over to first base and smiled and laughed like he was really enjoying himself. So, he has me leaning toward Japan for the foreign teams…(The entire team really seemed to smile and enjoy the game)…But no matter which one is successful you have to love them all..Some of the best T V I have watched in a while…Williamsport, PA is to be commended for the support they give the teams, 16,000 plus fans for tonight’s game, Iowa vs New York…Iowa was a little late on getting some offense going..But still a good game….More tomorrow so if you can, watch…..

Another Record breaking month!!!

By Pete, August 24, 2009 3:37 p08

Thanks for visiting my site…It is hard for me to believe the increase in hits since changing this site to WordPress…I really appreciate it….I know this is not an advise column, however, it would be nice to hear from some of you visiting this site, and for what it would be worth, I would give advice, for free…(this is a joke, but I am pretty sure you already know that)…And I wish the foreigners would leave me a message, in English, so I could find what was on their mind…my site tells me what countries are visiting my site, the number of pages and the number of hits, etc…..Reckon they have heard about Gov. Bill out here in New Mexico and since we both wear cowboy boots, think that I might have an inside track…..Naw, I don’t think so either….But really, thanks to all of you…

Chula Vista, CA Little League Team

By Pete, August 23, 2009 3:37 p08

Did you watch the California team beat Kentucky today, Sat. Aug 22. Those boys can hit ..when I had to leave the game they had already hit 5 home runs. They are loaded with hitters. I don’t know about their pitching, but I am thinking these boys may go all the way….But, like so many things, tomorrow is another day and we have to play them all don’t we…there are no gimmes…I hate to see any of those kids lose…just getting to that level makes them winners in my book…I enjoy watching these kids play, don’t you?…..Thanks to ESPN and all the sponsors and volunteers that make it happen…..
