Albuquerque Journal stated this morning that there is no Alabama Fan Club in Albuquerque, as fas as they knew, but the Notre Dame Fan Club was meeting at a certain place and time tonight. That’s a shame folks….No Alabama Fan Club….lots of fans but no club. Contact me if you want to start one here in Albuquerque…ok..thanks Pete
That is very understandable. There are a lot of Catholics in Albuquerque and in New Mexico. It is understandable that a famous Catholic University like Notre Dame would have a fan club there. I lived in Albuquerque for four years, and most of the people whom I knew who were fans of Alabama were not even from Albuquerque but were Air Force, Army, and Navy people who worked on Kirtland, Sandia, or Monsanto Bases. I wish I was there now. I would join your fan club in a minute. There was a fan club when I was there. The membership included me, myself, and I (as well as a few others, like my roommate who was from Birmingham).
In the late Sixties, there were more Albuquerque natives who remembered Governor George Wallace and his Stand in the School House door at the University of Alabama than there were people who knew of Bear Bryant and the University of Alabama football team. At least, it seemed to be so insofar as the membership of the church I attended on Hermosa Drive (Hermosa Drive Baptist) about five blocks from the Carlisle Gate of the base. The notoreity of Governor Wallace wasn’t all negative, though. During the Governor’s Presidential run of 1968, he made several trips to Albuquerque, and his speaking events had excellent attendance.

It certainly was an old fashion licking. Even the Bear only dreamed of that kind of licking, especially for the national championship and especially against Notre Dame. Everyone I’ve talked to had great respect for Coach Saban for not running up the score even though he probably could have. I have greater respect for Coach Saban for not doing that too, especially after the ballgame was already obviously won, and the championship was in the bag.
