Sports fans in Albuquerque…two fans anyway

Day before yesterday (1/8/13) in the letters to the sports editor of Albuquerque Journal, a fellow by the name of Nathan suggested that the fans of Alabama go back to their mobile homes and grits to celebrate…Very poor taste for one thing, grits are great even in New Mexico and we have many mobile homes here. Then “The Dr.” wrote in today stating what a miserable state New Mexico is, nothing but desert and he would take Alabama any day over the ugly state of New Mexico, or words to that affect. Both of them have a right to their opinion but how wrong they are. I am a Alabama boy, left the state in the fifties and spend the rest of my life in New Mexico. All of us know the beauty of the great state of New Mexico, from the flat lands and river valleys to the snow covered high mountain peaks. Some of the prettest timber you will see anywhere is in New Mexico and that may surprise some. Dry climate, no bugs to speak of and a little dust to test our love for the state in spring……The road is open “dr.” so take your little mind on back to Alabama and enjoy the beauty of that state and we all know how beautiful it is….Green, lush, good fishing, beautiful streams, ie, Coalfire Creek, lakes, hill county of northern Alabama, gulf coast and on and on….Nathan needs to take a trip down there to see for himself….Only thing, Nathan I must warn you that if you wise off down there about how bad Alabama is you may….well, just keep your mouth shut would be my advise…”Dr.” you probably need to keep your mouth shut also…..Now as to the National Championship game…..Bama won, Bama deserved to win and I think Texas A&M deserves to be number two……That’s how I see it anyway…
It certainly takes all kinds to make a world. Do you know anything about “The Dr.”? I suspect that he is a recent transplant to Kirtland with either a new Ph.D. or M.D. who hasn’t yet been acclimated. He is serving his time at KAFB in the middle of the high desert after a growing up back east. I knew many good doctors who initially thought just like him. His description of New Mexico is exactly the way I felt when I first arrived at KAFB in August, 1965. It is exactly the way I felt for at least my first six months there. After that, I became acclimated and loved every minute that I was in the Enchanted State. I came to see the dust blowing around as simply “Enchantment”, which occassionally blew over from Arizona to Texas then back again. I loved the scenery, the mountains, especially after my first trip to the back side of the Sandias and to the Crest as well as after my first trip to Glorieta Pass and to Santa Fe. I loved the jack rabbits and especially that unique bird called the roadrunner, which was nothing like the one in the cartoon; but it was just as unique, smart, and fast. “The Dr.” will get over it. I did. I’m willing to bet that he (or she) will even grow to love it.
Nathan is obviously a “native born” New Mexican who has never been to Alabama or to anywhere back east. All he needs to do is a little traveling to see the rest of the world. He will not find any part that is any better than New Mexico, but the educational experience will be good for him. Traveling broadens the mind and shows the individual that there is really basically no difference in people, or perhaps even scenery, no matter where one travels. One can find essentially the same scenery everywhere if one looks for it with an open mind. People are the same. If one travels to the moon or to another planet, one may find something different; but we will not know until we go there.

I live in Alabama, but have visited New Mexico 3 times. My last visit included a drive across the state. I love Alabama, but there are things about New Mexico I love as well. Very few BUGS, low humidity, and a variety of landscapes just to name a few. NEW MEXICO is definitely the LAND OF ENCHANTMENT, LIKEWISE it’s ALABAMA THE BEAUTIFUL! I believe Nathan needs to visit Alabama and well as many other states as possible. I have visited 20 of the 50 states and have found beautiful landscapes and friendly people in all of them. I believe NO matter where I lived I would say ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!
Roll Tide…of course, you will always be of that opinion, Elisa. Alabama is a very beautiful state and full of variety, from the gulf coast on up to the Tennessee River Valley. And New Mexico has its good points as well, a very diverse state, from the plains of southern New Mexico at around 3300 feet in elevation to the Rocky Mountains in Western and Northern New Mexico that will rise up to 13,000 plus feet. The low humidity does cut down on the insect population and we very seldom sweat…That is nice….Thanks for your input. Pete
