Bibical Amendments

Should we start some amendments to the bible. I mean, some of those rules just plum get in the way….You shall have no other God before me, I don’t think we can amend that, its pretty plain. ….You shall not misuse the name of the Lord. Now that one would really hamper a bunch of people, limiting their vocabulary tremendously…. Remember the sabbath day and keep it Holy. Maybe we should add the amendment that we could give 30 seconds of silence while attending our favorite pro football game Sunday afternoon. That would probably take care of the remembering the sabbath, but the keep it Holy…hummmm, but that’s what it says….Honor your father and mother so that you may live long….No change needed here huh, as it helps them and you…Thou shall not murder…we all know that except maybe the Roe v Wade people feel it is already an amendment, but I don’t think so…..Thou shall not commit adultery and remember Jesus amended this one by saying if you see a woman and even think, er, shall we say..oh, wow and maybe a thought or two on further down the gutter, you guilty….I know, but that’s what it says….Thou shall not steal, what’s his is his and whats mine is mine, we can’t argue with that can we?….Thou shall not give false testimony against thou neighbor, ie, bunch of cars round my neighbor’s house, wonder what he’s selling, must be something cause did you see that expensive SUV he is driving. Its fast too……You shall not covet your neighbors wife or stuff cause that is liable to make you break a bunch of the other no-nos, ie, adultery, stealing…You steal his ass and you in a heap of trouble or steal his oxen either, same thing…..I read on in the New Testament where we now live under grace, the grace of Jesus Christ. He tells us that he came to fulfill the Ten Commandments….He says we all sin….He says repent, turn from your sins and you will be saved, even to those who believe on His name. So, it is not about how good I am but about how merciful He is. We are all breaking the laws, but He is sure to forgive us. Is there one who does not sin among us. No, not one He says….So maybe you are like me and the one amendment we all need is GRACE….Remember the song, “I’m just an old sinner saved by Grace.” I hope you will take a moment to assess where you are today. I tried to put a little humor in this posting, but it is very real and we all need to think about our relationship with the Almighty. He’s Boss, well, really, He is higher up than that, He is OUR KING….
You better watch the use of the word “King”; whether it is “Our King” or anyone’s king. It is another of those words, like the “n” word that peolple don’t like today, expecially in the Media. To many, “King” seems too undemocratic for today’s “democratic world”. Our world today is really no more democratic today than it ever was, but we like to think that it is, and that we are.
In fact, it is my humble opinion that the use of the word “King” in the Bible is just a little over done and contrary to the real meaning that Christ intended to convey. Something got lost in translation somewhere down the road of time. Jesus Christ was sent to be a “man among men”, no different from us (except that He was sent by God, His Father from Heaven). This makes Him different, but it doesn’t make Him King. He was democratic in his teachings, in His Outlook, and in His Worldview. He never intended to be a “king over men to whom He came (or was sent) to show the Way, but He came to do just that to show us and to lead the Way. A leader is not necessarily a “King”, but I can see why it became so viewed by the translators of antiquity since kings were the common system of governance at the time. That is likely the only system of governance of which they were familiar.
I hope my opinion concerning biblical interpretation does not offend anyone, but opinions like this concerning the Bible are exactly the reason that I gave up preaching the gospel after graduration from seminary. If one can’t win over the crowd, one can, at least, try to win them over one at a time. I think Mother Teresa said something to that affect.
I don’t know…The bible says, “King of the Jews”…That all I know, well, I know that I serve Him and consider Him my King….You should do as you feel or think in that regard….Pete
