Mountain West Tournament Winner…..UNM Lobo’s? Not This Year…

Albuquerque is a basketball town….Always has been and I hope it always will be….This year, however, in both men’s and women’s basketball our fortunes have not been so good. Our men’s team is 14 – 10 overall and 6 – 6 in conference play, seventh place in the Mountain West…Our Lady Lobo’s are 13 -10 and 9 – 3 in the conference good for third place. The ladies have made a stronger showing with a six game winning streak. Winning is important, here as anywhere else, that said the men still are pulling in a capacity crowd, 14,000 to 15,000 every game. The ladies are bringing in 5000 plus fans for their games. So, it is a basketball crowd, but some of the faithful seem to be losing patience with our coaches, both men and women. The six game streak has quieted the fans for the ladies, but the men have lost 3 in a row and five of the last seven games….That hurts…Any tournament bids seem unlikely at this point unless we can win the Mountain West Tournament. The Lobo’s play well in Las Vegas, but this year, unless there is some serious changes in their offensive play, it “ain’t gonna happen”. The shooting is “colder” this year than any year since I can remember. I hate to say, “wait until next year” this early, but…..for the men it seems that way. For the Lady Lobo’s they stand a good chance if they keep playing like they have the last six games. I see 8 to 10,000 fans returning to the Pit for the Ladies games if they keep this streak up…..The Pit can rock when the Lobos are winning….Men and Women..
