Luke 2: 5 – 14 (New International Version)

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel  of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you. You will find the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

Amen…

If this Luke 2:5-14 event occurred in the 21st century to college educated shepherds abiding in the field watching over their flock, one could only imagine what would happen. I suspect, in the first place, that they would not be terrified. In the second place, I suspect that they would be so engrossed in arriving at an explanation of the events taking place around them that they would have never heard what the angel of the Lord was saying. Instead, the college educated shepherds would be busy writing down a vivid description of the event, even to the point of recording it in living color with the best TV cameras available in the form of their cell phones and deciding which scientific publication to publish the description of this phenomena that was taking place around them; and, in the process, completely miss the meaning of the event, recording, instead, just another description of an event in the skies, probably a fiery meteor streaking across the skies. The Lord knew very well what He was doing by having the event occur in an age when shepherds were uneducated in the ways of science and awestruck by phenomena that they did not understand, otherwise the event would have been lost and mankind would have been without a reminder of his place in the Kingdom of God and the coming together of the beginning with the present and the progress towards the end all the time with God being in control.

Yes, the Lord chose the right time and place and now, over 2000 years later we are still talking about it and awaiting on the second coming.
