Election Year…as if you did not know….

Posted by Pete | Posted in News | Posted on 25-09-2012

We are facing a very important election this year, for a few reasons…One: Our economy is the pits and it will take a valiant effort to turn it around in another four years. Two: The nation debt is so large and we are dependent on China for our cash and our relationship is a bit shaky, right? Congress will not work with folks across the aisle and that is very bad… Three: World politics and say what you will, but the Muslin world is different. They want to exist, but they want Israel totally out of the picture, which ain’t a gonna happen. And since we are a CHRISTIAN nation, the roots of our nation is Israel. That will not change and we will always support them.. It’s your call folks, vote as you will and vote for who you think is the best candidate, but before you pull that handle, please pray that you are voting for the right person…… I do know that voting for what the government “can do for me” is the wrong attitude. The “gimme, gimme, gimme” attitude just ain’t gonna cut it, but you already know that….Don’t you?…..Pete

Muslins pray for What?

Posted by Pete | Posted in News | Posted on 15-09-2012

The paper stated this morning that after Friday’s prayers, the Muslin worshipers went out and started burning American and other Western countries businesses. What do they ask Allah for, maybe matches or cigarette lighters, good kindling or fast burning fires? Crazy, huh?……I don’t understand those folks, it’s just weird….

America…A Christian Nation…

I was very disappointed and surprised when Obama said that “America is no longer a Christian nation.” He tried to point out all the different beliefs of people who now live in America and are trying to change America to fit them….That does not sit well with me and a bunch of others. There are still millions and millions of us Christian believers who do not share his sentiments. They are a few non-Christians who live here, but they were invited in and no changes were ever promised to accommodate any of their beliefs, what ever they were. So, back off Obama, we are still a Christian Nation….America, can you say Amen?….Thanks, Pete

Squash Plant

I have four squash plants, one of them a white squash….Our first time to plant white squash…What a plant. It has taken over the little area I have. The other plants are there but you can’t see them. We do get a yellow or Mexican squash from time to time, but the white or patty pan are just unbelieveable in production and taste. Below are a couple of pictures. One of my neighbors asked if the plant was going cross the street…

Cigar Box Guitar

Until a few days ago, I had never heard of a cigar box guitar….But, cigar box guitars and fiddles date back to the Civil War. I attend church with Hector Pena who builds them. I have not heard a tune played on one yet, but maybe one day I can report to you on that. Here is a picture of Hector playing one of his guitars. Hector probably sells these things so if you have any interest let us know…Pete

Daily TV News

Who do you get your news from today….CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX or CNN or one of the other places that news is available, maybe even BBC America….Lots of news channels anymore. I watch CBS and I guess mainly because we like the local news before and after the evening news. What’s your favorite? A fellow told me the other day that I should watch Fox for the real story…another said whatever you do don’t watch Fox….I did watch Fox and it seemed ok. Is one network more honest and correct than one of the others? Do they have an agenda? Are they biased? Do they try to lead the citizens around by their news pitch? Do you have an opinion on the nightly news…..Remember Huntley/Brinkley, 1956 until 1970….Good Night, Chet…Good night, David…The good old days, right? Or, how about Walter Cronkite? All of us believed him, didn’t we? When he said, “And that’s the way it is.”, that’s the way it was…..I hope you will let me know your favorite, you don’t have to sign your name, use  a pen name….Let me hear, “The Rest of the Story”. Ok? Pete

Navajo Refining, Artesia, NM

My very first customer as a salesman, many years ago mind you, was Navajo Refinery. It was a learning experience for me and it took them a while to train me. I mean that in a good way. For example, I was always hounding the guy who headed up the asphalt department about his road jobs, where they were, who the successful bidder was, when they were going to start, how many loads of asphalt per day were required and on and on…One day he says to me, “you do know that you can get a lot of the same information I have by joining the Associated Contractors and receiving the bid sheets and getting all the bid letting and successful bidders, etc, every month.” Well, I did not know that but we did start and as a company developed the weekly “asphalt plan” that was put together each week by me and  came out every Friday afternoon and was sent to all the terminals outlining how many men and units they had to send to work certain jobs. This was done by our operations Vice President and  everyone at the terminal levels hated it. All us guys working with the customers loved it as we kept equipment where it was needed and when it was needed, but all drivers were working and except of rains and breakdowns, they made good money. If rains or breakdowns shut down a job, our drivers screamed as they worked on commission…. But back to Navajo Refinery, I have very fond memories of that company and all of the employees I worked with there. I just felt like “one of the boys” for the most part. But when they called and needed something, I jumped….I mean really. And my boss did also. Over the years I called on many companies and had excellent relationships with most of them, but Navajo always was special. You know, I even dream about  them from time to time. In a dream the other night I was wandering down through the refinery, by myself and one of the workers found me strolling and wanted to know who I was and where my visitors badge was…I tried to tell him that everyone knew me,  but we had to look a long time to find anyone that could remember who I was….I imagine that in “real life”  not too many remember the old bald headed sales guy any more. Most all the people I worked with has relocated to Dallas….Oh well, so it goes, and I guess fond memories are all most us old folks can hope for…That’s not true either as I stay very busy, but thanks to the folks at Navajo for the good relationships and long time ride…It was a good’un…….Pete Hester

Tropical Storm Isaac/Update

Update date on Isaac….It was not Florida that was hit but Louisiana. There is something just not right about New Orleans. Any of you that have spent time in the New Orleans airport and looked up at the mast of passing ships realize that just ain’t right. The Mississippi River is what?, 21 feet above the level of the city of New Orleans???.That can’t be right, but that’s what they say. One day that will be, how shall I say this, a leveling of this river and the city of New Orleans will be moved. I don’t know when, but it will happen sooner or later in my opinion. For me, I would move to higher ground.NOW. But if you folks want to continue to live there, go ahead, but it ain’t kosher for a river to be higher than the surrounding town. That is a disaster waiting to happen. They will need several little guys with their fingers in the dike, or levee in this case, huh?.Now don’t jump on me folks, I know you love that city, but it is not right……Now, the original post…..

I was reading this morning where Isaac would wreck havoc on Florida in the next couple of days. Wind and rain, probably flooding. I would hate to have storms like that coming toward our home and I hope all will be well with the residents who live in that area. Out here in New Mexico, our storms are usually blowing dust. Folks down in Florida probably wonder what the heck that would be like…Well, its pretty bad, believe me on that. Would you folks believe that about fifty miles of the Rio Grande River is dry? Yep, just south of Albuquerque the river runs dry. We cannot keep enough water in it to keep the catfish going. I think most of the water south of T or C, coming out of Elephant Butte Reservoir,  belongs to Texas. Our farmers in the Hatch/Las Cruces area are needing water but its just not there. Our monsoon this year has been a bust for the most part. We have had rain here and there, just not enough of it. We are not giving up but we wish we could have just a little of Isaac, not a whole lot mind you, but a little bit. Well, we should be careful about what we wish for, huh?….Pete

College Football, 2012

Predictions? Naw, not me….I was pretty bad last year so this year I’ll leave the pickings up to the professional pickers. But I would not have picked USC No. 1….Who then? Well, Alabama is gonna be good, but this may be LSU’s year, key word is may be as Alabama always seems to find a way….I hope so. Now, on to my Lobo’s. Did you see them on ESPN a few years ago when the fellow that was the “b” got out of line and spelled, “Loobs” on National TV. (That really helped our cause…) Well, this is the year we recover from that disaster…..The LOBOS will win at least 5, lookout Texas, better get ready..(Why do I say stuff like that? Gosh!!!!) How about Texas A & M and Missouri in their new conference? Before its over they may wish they had joined the WAC….(There I go again..What you trying to do Pete, run off the rest of your readers, both of them?) And TCU in the Big 12, and Coach Patterson, I’m thinking you gonna miss the Mountain West..However, you have had some very good teams…One other “non-prediction” is New Mexico State is gonna have a pretty fair ball club this year if they can keep their first stringers healthy. They don’t have a lot of subs and they gonna need them all, especially on Nov. 3, Auburn and Nov. 24, BYU, well, shoot they gonna need them on Sept 22, that’s when they play the LOBOS in Albuquerque also. I feel badly for the Aggies, the WAC is giving up football and they will not have a conference. And the Mountain West does not want them….Humm, wonder if the Big East will consider them? (there I go again…) Ok, I’m out’a here….Pete
