I hope you will take the time to read all or a lot of the stories I have written about Coalfire, Alabama and some of the people involved with life around there, mostly in the 1940 and 1950’s. All of them are true and accurate to the best of my abilities to recall them. They are included in my favorite and featured stories, so just click on the “read more” note and they should show up. Thanks for reading and or downloading them….Pete

Ole Miss Rebels….How Long Since A Top 10 Rating?

Back in the sixties, the old man Manning was tearing up college football. Matter of fact, Wikipedia says in 1969 Mississippi played the first prime time football game ever. It tells how many yards Archie Manning threw for (over 400) and two or three touchdowns. I remember him in college and also remember his pro career in New Orleans. Sent his boys to Newman High School, in New Orleans, also the high school of Odell Beckham, WR of the New York Giants. Archie’s boy Eli is now tossing footballs to him on Sundays or when ever they play. But did you know that on campus at Ole Miss the speed limit is 18 mph is honor of Archie’s number? When the Giants won the Super Bowl they changed it to 10 mph for a time, but that didn’t fly for long and they moved it back to 18 mph. Well, Ole Miss is number 3 in some polls and no. 4 in some polls…Either way, they are good…How good? We will see. As strong as the SEC conference is, they will have to earn it every week now. (Well, New Mexico State goes down there in a couple of weeks, but they should be safe, but please, Ole Miss CFO, make sure there is sufficient funds for my Aggies after the game…ok…Florida paid us 950,000 to make them look good, and we did….so remember your obligation….) Well, got off the subject matter there for a while, but it is good to see Ole Miss in the ratings. I’m kind of pulling for them. I hope they can keep it going.

Lou Holtz…Two Americas…Good Reading..

This is a e-mail from Bill Van Winkle down in Lubbock, TX…Thanks Bill, this is a great article that I wanted to share with readers of hesterbooks.com…
Lou Holtz Nails It !!
The Democrats are right, there are two Americas. The America that works and the America that doesn’t. The America that contributes and the America that doesn’t. It’s not the haves and the have nots, it’s the dos and the don’ts. Some people do their duty as Americans, obey the law, support themselves, contribute to society and others don’t. That’s the divide in America .
It’s not about income inequality, it’s about civic irresponsibility. It’s about a political party that preaches hatred, greed and victimization in order to win elective office. It’s about a political party that loves power more than it loves its country.
That’s not invective, that’s truth, and it’s about time someone said it.
The politics of envy was on proud display a couple weeks ago when President Obama pledged the rest of his term to fighting “income inequality.” He noted that some people make more than other people, that some people have higher incomes than others, and he says that’s not just. That is the rationale of thievery.
The other guy has it, you want it, Obama will take it for you. Vote Democrat. That is the philosophy that produced Detroit.
It is the electoral philosophy that is destroying America. It conceals a fundamental deviation from American values and common sense because it ends up not benefiting the people who support it, but a betrayal.
The Democrats have not empowered their followers, they have enslaved them in a culture of dependence and entitlement, of victim-hood and anger instead of ability and hope. The president’s premise – that you reduce income inequality by debasing the successful-seeks to deny the successful the consequences of their choices and spare the unsuccessful the consequences of their choices. Because, by and large, income variations in society are a result of different choices leading to different consequences.
Those who choose wisely and responsibly have a far greater likelihood of success, while those who choose foolishly and irresponsibly have a far greater likelihood of failure.
Success and failure usually manifest themselves in personal and family income. You choose to drop out of high school or to skip college – and you are apt to have a different outcome than someone who gets a diploma and pushes on with purposeful education.
You have your children out of wedlock and life is apt to take one course; you have them within a marriage and life is apt to take another course. Most often in life our destination is determined by the course we take.
My doctor, for example, makes far more than I do. There is significant income inequality between us. Our lives have had an inequality of outcome, but, our lives also have had an in equality of effort. While my doctor went to college and then devoted his young adulthood to medical school and residency, I got a job in a restaurant. He made a choice, I made a choice, and our choices led us to different outcomes. His outcome pays a lot better than mine. Does that mean he cheated and Barack Obama needs to take away his wealth? No, it means we are both free men in a free society where free choices lead to different outcomes.
It is not inequality Barack Obama intends to take away, it is freedom. The freedom to succeed, and the freedom to fail. There is no true option for success if there is no true option for failure. The pursuit of happiness means a whole lot less when you face the punitive hand of government if your pursuit brings you more happiness than the other guy. Even if the other guy sat on his arse and did nothing. Even if the other guy made a lifetime’s worth of asinine and short sighted decisions.
Barack Obama and the Democrats preach equality of outcome as a right, while completely ignoring inequality of effort.
The simple Law of the Harvest – as ye sow, so shall ye reap – is sometimes applied as, “The harder you work, the more you get.”
Obama would turn that upside down. Those who achieve are to be punished as enemies of society and those who fail are to be rewarded as wards of society. Entitlement will replace effort as the key to upward mobility in American society if Barack Obama gets his way. He seeks a lowest common denominator society in which the government besieges the successful and productive to foster equality through mediocrity. He and his party speak of two Americas, and their grip on power is based on using the votes of one to sap the productivity of the other. America is not divided by the differences in our outcomes, it is divided by the differences in our efforts.
It is a false philosophy to say one man’s success comes about unavoidably as the result of another man’s victimization.
What Obama offered was not a solution, but a separatism. He fomented division and strife, pitted one set of Americans against another for his own political benefit. That’s what socialists offer. Marxist class warfare wrapped up with a bow. Two Americas, coming closer each day to proving the truth to Lincoln’s maxim that a house divided against itself cannot stand.
“Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.”

Winners are harder to pick this week…I’m very glad I have a limited selection and am not trying to pick the “big” games….I predict more upsets in the coming weeks…but for now….

Alabama vs Louisiana-Monroe….Saban does not usually run up the score…usually, but this week the polls may push him to want to have some big numbers…So I think Bama by a bunch….Bama 34 – 0

Arizona vs UCLA….The Bruins have been in some close games and they are a good team and are the favorite by 4….however, my upset this week is Arizona by 3…missed by a little UCLA 56 – 30

Wisconsin vs Hawaii…Wisconsin by 14, at least….Wisc 28 – 0

Texas Tech vs TCU….Tech is playing good ball and really looking good last week in their win over Arkansas….but, back down to earth this week Red Raiders as the Horn Frogs are gonna win by 7….or more…Ooops….TCU 55 – 52  They scared TCU is what I’m thinking….

New Mexico vs Wyoming…Lobos get their second win of the season, by 3. New Mexico 38 – 28…

New Mexico State gets the week off to prepare for the Lobo’s next week.

Stony Brook vs Williams and Mary…I have not followed Williams and Mary but in reading up on them…well, I just think they are gonna be to much for the Seahawks….W&M by 14….W&M 21 – 0

Uncle,
Do you remember Pop singing as he worked, as I was with him a lot as a very young person, he would sing a little, never the whole song just a line or sometimes maybe two lines. A lot of time it was just 🎶 dee da lum, dee da lum day🎶,( I don’t think I spelled that right). Do you remember that?
He liked the Jimmy Rodger’s song “T for Texas, T for Tennessee,” but that was about all he sang. He liked some of Hank Williams Sr. songs.
Early on Sunday morning, he would watch The Wally Fowler Show, they sang Southern Gospel as I recall, they always ended the show with: May the Lord up above bless you real good, I’ve spent a lot of time praying that He would. He really liked it because he sang it a lot.
Sometimes he would sing ” All the Kings horses and all the Kings men could never put it together again. I remember thinking at the time he just liked the nursery rhyme about Humpity- Dumpity. This must have been another of his favorites because he sang if often.
Now if you will let me move forward to just a few years ago. In 2010 my sweet wife and I got me a new truck and it came with the new Sirius XM radio. I love it because I like to listen to old country music. Well one day on my way back from Pickens county, to my surprise there was Hank Thompson singing a song titled ” A Humpity, Dumpity Heart” as it turned out it was Pop’s song, about ” all the Kings horses and all the Kings men could never put it together again.” Well I’m hear to tell you I couldn’t wait to get home and call my kids about hearing Pop’s song. I knew they had heard him sing those lines before too.
If you google it, it is a cute little song from the late 1940’s.
Just a few of the wonderful memories I have of the Man, I call Pop

Danny, thanks so much…and yes I do remember him singing and seem like it was always just part of a song, but I do remember a little more of, “T for Texas, T for Tennessee, T or Texas and T for Tennessee, it’s T for Thelma, Lord that gal made a mess out of me…” or something like that  and sometimes he would add a Jimmy Rogers yodel…….Thanks for reminding me, Dan…He was a happy fellow…Pete

45th President of the United States….

Have you thought about the name of the 45th President of the United States….In thinking about those running….We could have another President Bush or President Clinton…we could have but I don’t think so…Do you? I like Jep Bush and I am sure he is a good man, I just don’t think he will get elected…not now, maybe later…..President Clinton, I think her run in politics is over…you can fool some of the people some of the time, well, you know that story….so on to the next prospects…President Trump…I don’t think we have ever had a president that was about ego, have we? He does have some pretty good ideas, but the others have picked up on it or already had it, so the ego will do him in…Sorry sir, I don’t think so…President Ted Cruz..hum, well, could be pretty good and pretty solid, especially in the southwest, but probably not nation wide…President Scott Walker…nope, Midwest may go for him but not nation wide either…President Ben Carson…he is cool, a good thinker, smart, good ideas and black and he does not seem to be racist either….President Carly Fiorina, same for her….smart, quick thinker, experienced in leading, woman and a pretty woman…so she would be a good one….I think it will come down to Carly Fiorina and Ben Carson and maybe Rubio in the Republican race before trimming down to the one person to face the democratic candidate. I did not say, President Rubio, although I like him and like the way he presents himself and his ideas, I just don’t see him in the race…..I think it will be Carly Fiorina running against Hilary Clinton….and if so, Carly will blow her away…..Okay, presenting the 45th President of the United States of American, President Carly Fiorina…..Our Big Momma….45 tries before we got one….Big Momma….Hilary can’t handle that title….Carly can…
