Lost in the Black Range
The writer of the story, an old man, gets caught in a snow storm in the Black Range and encounters an Indian girl who leads him to her tribe. As he enters the camp through a mysterious rock portal he changes back into his youthful self. While he is there the warriors of the tribe return from a hunt with a prisoner, a buffalo soldier, from Fort Selden. The writer has timed traveled back to the 19th Century. The two of them escape back through the portal, into the 21st Century, knowing that the aging process may resume, which it does, requiring a speedy trip back to the rock portal before the buffalo soldier dies. The writer is introduced to the buffalo soldiers and the Warm Spring Apache Indians and learns of their history.
