The Cousins books are where I started trying to write. I was recovering from by-pass surgery, and since I had always wanted to write , I felt like if I did not do some writing pretty quick that I may not have any time left to do anything. So, I did try it and admittly I am not a good writer, just a wanna be writer, but these books are what they are…just stories that I have tried to tell about my teen years. You can catch a few of my chapters of Cousins, the first book, in the down loads. Read Big Momma, which is pretty dang close to the truth. I loved her very much as did all of us Cousins. I want to re-publish the original cousins picture made around 1946 or so back in Alabama and published very early in my posts at this site. All but three of cousins are still alive, so here we are again for your viewing pleasure…good looking bunch, huh?

As one of the cousins in the picture (the thumb sucker), I always thought that this picture was made at Big Mama’s house (Granddaddy Bonner’s homeplace), but I believe that it was Sandra (another one of the cousin’s in the picture) who set me straight. Thank God for older siblings and cousins. Without them, I don’t know what us kids would have done.
After I was set on the straight path, I can look at this house in the background and tell that it was not Big Mama’s old house. It just doesn’t look the way I remember it. It seems too small. What a difference a little truth can make?
My older sibling, Cecil, who is another one of the cousins in the picture, once introduced me to the element of “fire” in a very big, yet small, way that I will remember forever. At our house next to the church in Coal Fire, he once grabbed me by the shoulder and told me that he wanted to show me where someone was trying to burn down our house. He pulled me around the corner and showed me some clearly visible smudges on the white wall next to the chimney. It very nearly scared me to death. I only realized much later in life that Cecil was the culprit who was trying to burn down our house with some matches that he had stolen but it created an impression that can only be created in the mind of a young kid.
Yeah, it was Sandra’s house…I did not know the story of the fire..Cecil and I burned many matches smoking…We started pretty young.
I noticed your blog when I was looking for something not related at all, but this page was one of the first sites listed in Yahoo, your website must be insanely popular! Continue the good work!
Thanks Rebecca, I don’t think it is insanely popular but I do have several visitors..I appreciate your kind comments and I hope you visit us again sometimes…Pete Hester
