Rommel, Erwin 1891 – 1944 The Desert Fox

General Rommel, also known as “the desert fox” because of his victories with the Afrika Korps, was one of the top Generals in Hitlers army. Rommel had a brilliant career with his tank corp in  Libya. In 1942, he was reassigned to France for Duty.  And Rommel was  made commander in Northern France in 1944. In  his first visit back to Germany since all the bombing had taken place he found his homeland in disarray, no supplies, everything bombed out and in lack of any type home life, Rommel could see that the end was near. Many were upset with Hitler and wanted him removed from office in some manner. While  Rommel was certainly upset with Hitler and Hitler’s killing of the Jews, which he claimed to have not known about, it is not known if he was a party to the plot to remove Hitler from office. But because of his defeatist attitude, he was believed by Hitler to have been party to the plot. After the plot was attempted and failed, he was wounded in a air raid and while convalescing at home he received a visit from the high command stating that they were giving him the opportunity to commit suicide because they believed he had been party to the overthrow plot. He was given the opportunity to take the poison and be given a state funeral with a statement made that it was death by natural causes. and his staff and family would be protected, otherwise they would also be eliminated. Hitler wanted the suicide to look like death by natural causes  to keep down further flair ups from military personnel. Field Marshall Rommel had the time (ten minutes) to advise his wife and son,who was home on leave from the war, the truth of his impending death and the offered protection and that for the protection to hold, they were to forever  remain quiet about the suicide. It was  reportedly a  fast acting drug and within seconds of ingesting  he was dead. After Hitler’s demise, the story of Rommel’s suicide was told……Since I brought up his name a while back I thought some of you might like to hear his story….Matter of fact, I had one request to tell the story, so there it is and as it is with a lot of war stories, it is not very pretty, is it?…Pete
