Coin Collecting

Did I ever tell you that I enjoyed collecting coins? Yes, a numismatic…I was really into it a few years ago, then coins went stale, many reduced in value. Today, with the present prices of gold and silver they are coming back. No, I don’t have any gold, gosh darn it and I have very little silver but the ones that I do have have gained value with the good silver prices…I hope it holds…Matter of fact, some folks probably think coins would be a good investment nowadays. I like wheat back pennies and Jefferson nickels…back in the 1970’s and early eighties I was told that the Jefferson nickels would be good to save and at the time very few were saving them. I could get good coins in pocket change every day…They are hard to find today, the older dates is what I am referring to….usually, if you get a good coin or two from a cash register, go back to the same cash register and buy some more change…Someone has either needed to get into their coin stash or some child found them and needed some candy money. Either way, I always look at my change for good coins..So, if you have several good coins, put them away…Our paper money may lose all it’s value one of these days but the coins will have the metal value or face value….won’t it?…heck, I don’t know…But have you noticed there seems to be a comfort factor when you have coins to jingle in your pocket?…Or is that a depression era thing?

I will never be any sort of numismatist. Neither will my wife. I am like Marina’s family always said of her as a kid growing up in the Philippines. Any jingling coins in her pocket or purse or hand (or however young girls carried their coins in the Philippines) would continually yell, “Here I am, spend me.” My Dad always said that money was only a “medium of exchange”. It only has value as it is exchanged. Thus, I exchange it as fast as I can get my grubby little hands on it. Remember the story of the rich man that Jesus told in the Bible. The poor rich man, who built bigger barns in order to store his earthly goods (I guess that includes his media of exchange), quickly lost his life. Frankly, I’d rather have life.
Believe me, I spent most of my coins, but the “old ones” I keep. That does not make them worth more or less…I just like them. Dad sent me most of my silver dimes..I didn’t even know he had any of them…I will not need to build a barn to store them, maybe a bigger shoe box!!!
