Schooling stuff, West Mesa High School & Heron Lake School

According to this mornings paper students at Wesa Mesa High School here in Albuquerque cut a record of 88,000 classes during this school year. A school of 1700 students cut 88,000 classes!!!!  They pointed out they had a open campus which will be changed for next year. Question????? Why did you let it go a full year before doing something? School management and teachers may be slower than the students, wouldn’t you say? You would figure that someone at school would notice when that many students are absent. The students are doing what comes natural and to me, it seems the teachers are saying, “this is making my job easier” and just let it happen. But maybe I am missing something. If you are a teacher at West Mesa High, let me know where I am wrong…….According to this mornings paper, “Fishing Line” under the Heron Lake report….Don Wolfley, Lake Heron Guide Service has this to say about fishing at Heron Lake…, “No real schooling of fish are taking place yet.”….I really don’t know what to say about the Lake Heron school but could they be cuttings classes as well, huh? I must speak here on behalf of the teachers and administration of this school, because I have been a teacher. This really sounds bad, but if you look at the total number of classes in a year it is not as stunning. 1700 students in one day have at a minimum of 6,800 classes per day which amounts to roughly 1,258,000 classes in a year. So 88,000 were skipped that leaves at least 1,170,000 classes were attended. I not saying they could not have caught this during the school year, but many times stastics of this nature are not tallied until the end of the school year or they are completed mid-year and end of year. Based on my experience over half of the skipped classes occur after mid-year with many occurring March-end of the school year. This information is based on number minimums in Alabama the number minimums in New Mexico could be higher.

I hear you and I agree that it is probably not quite as bad as it sounds and the article did state that most of the misses were the two hours after lunch hour. I think though, the performance of the students will be better next year having a closed campus…Thanks, Pete

I will be better with a closed campus, but number of skipped classes may remain high if the campus does not have a security system/security guards in place. It is amazing what students will do to miss class.

Yeah, it has been a long time ago, but I still remember skipping every chance I had…

What an awesome site. Keep up the good work. I sent it to 25 people so far.

Thanks Josh….I appreciate it..Pete Hester

Sorry! Bad statistics can not be countered with more bad statistics. The real point is that our public schools are bad, and students really do not want to attend our failing public school system in the 21st century. The students feel that they do not need to attend class regularly because they do not have to attend class regularly, and they do not attend class regularly because they are not challenged in school. The teachers can not challenge them because of the fear of lawsuits, mostly from irate parents who do not challenge their own kids at home. Sorry! I can no longer support the public school system as it is structured in America. Let the kids and their parents pay for their own education, then they will appreciate the little education they can afford. Leave the poor tax paying public alone.
