Until a few days ago, I had never heard of a cigar box guitar….But, cigar box guitars and fiddles date back to the Civil War. I attend church with Hector Pena who builds them. I have not heard a tune played on one yet, but maybe one day I can report to you on that. Here is a picture of Hector playing one of his guitars. Hector probably sells these things so if you have any interest let us know…Pete
I’ve seen the cigar box guitars on several of our many trips to the War Eagle Arts & Crafts Festival over the years and heard sound coming from them there a time or two. Being a novice in guitar music, I am not one to judge their quality, but they sound pretty good. Their music is a little better than that which came from the old homemade flutes that we use to make from hollow sticks in Coal Fire; but, in our case, if the “flute” made any sound at all, it was a “good flute”.
