“Well, I Never…..!!!!!

One of my Mom’s expressions was “Well, I never” and most of us had heard it enough to realize that the end of that expression was, “heard of such” and therefore she did not have to finish that statement. It was an expression like, “dad-barn it”, dad-gum-it”, “shoot fire”, “what’s the world coming to” and you can add hundreds more. I was wondering what Mom would say if she were alive today concerning same sex marriages, about legalized abortions, legalized drugs, nudity on TV and the internet and numerous other happenings. I am pretty sure she would say about either of those subjects, “Well, I never…..” Every morning I read the paper and I am of a different generation than Mom, but as I read even I think, “Well, I never…” I guess it’s just me, that I am an old codger and not a forward thinking individual and that I am really living in the past, believing in an old fashion book call the Bible. A book that seemingly has gone out of style and many think it certainly has no place in a modern society such as ours. A younger generation runs our major television networks and movie studios, where most of American’s get their educations, and the stories they want to tell seems to be about explosives, fires, modernistic weapons of destruction, folks killing folks, the more outlandish the death and destruction the better, vampires, far out fantasies and on and on……You know what, I watch mostly sports, because to the rest of that stuff it’s, “Well, I never….” Thank you, Mom, you were right…. Pete Hester

You better watch out because your Mom’s favorite expression, as well as those others, may be banned by the Media along with the “n” word since the Media now thinks it has the legitimate authority to control the speech of everyone of us. I have news for them. Only my Mom and Dad had the right to teach me which words to say and not to say, and they did a pretty good job of it. My schools had the right to teach the language that is proper, but they had no right to enforce it. The Media have no right whatsoever other than to sale newspapers and TV time and to make the politicians happy or sad.
The Bible is an old fashioned book. It was old fashioned from the time it was written, not just in printed form, but in oral form as well. The oral tradition began with the many oral conversations that God had with His people. It suggested the right and proper things that He wanted His people to do, but His people rebelled from the beginning as His people are rebelling in these latter days. Yep! The Bible is an old fashioned book, but that is exactly the reason for its value and its endurance. We are living in the era of the sorricest generation most of which have no chance, but a few will be saved. That’s the greatest thing of all.
Yes sir, you are right….
I can just see Aunt Otera watching the news today, not Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, nor Eric Severeid, but one of the many lip flappers on one of the 24-hour news channels, and saying, “Well, I never…” I can’t imagine the add-ons when reports of the Orlando Massacre came on, but I’m sure they would be good ones. Or the exchange of speeches of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump where each try to best the other in name calling and character assassination. More “Well, I never’s…” I can remember my mom being so exasperated with national TV that she almost never watched it, neither the news nor, and most especially, what she considered the far our unchristian programming. I can’t remember any “Well, I never…” responses, but I do remember a few “What’s the world coming to” responses. I once considered buying my Mom a cable or satellite subscription where she would have options other than the regular network channels, like the History Channel, the various religious channels, the cooking channels, etc.; but I realized that it wasn’t worth it because she wouldn’t watch them either, even the religious channels because most of them presented diverse interpretations of the Bible in which she did not believe and, others, like the History Channel, presented a false, self-serving interpretation of history and certainly not the kind of traditional history that had been taught in the public schools prior to the Sixties. Even I learned a particular world view at Southeastern Baptist Seminary which I hesitated to discuss with Mom because it was contrary to the world view in which she understood her Scriptures. Even though both were as right as the other and only treated factual history in different ways, there was still was the clash of generations and a time warp that made understanding difficult. It is this clash in which I, as a student of theology and of the Bible, am still struggling. Thanks, Pete, for the kind of postings that bring out the clash of the generations and of our various responses to it.
Uncle,
You have done it again. I have heard her say “Well I never” a bunch of times. I can’t even start to think about what she or Pop would say about our country or the world today… I’m living it and I don’t understand what’s happening.
You have that right, Nephew, I kind of wish I could hear her say it one more time. I
guess I will one of these days Thanks for the comments, Dan.
