Oreo Addict, I agree with the rats….

I did not know until today that Oreo cookies are addictive. Per todays Albuquerque Journal, Oct. 17, 2013, by Kathleen Megan, Professor Joseph Schroeder, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Connecticut and some of his students have proven that rats prefer Oreo cookies over cocaine and morphine, proving that high sugar and high fat foods are more addicting than the aforementioned drugs, they say. The rats keep coming back to the cookie jar even after the cookies were removed. And, like me, the rats take the cookies off the cream, eat the cream, then the cookie. I’m an Oreo addict. Sweetie bought some of the double filled Oreo’s the other day and I finished them off in a hurry. She would not buy anymore nor would she let me buy any. However, I stood near a end cap filled with the beautiful cookies and starred for several minutes, reading the labels and salivating. I was looking for an open package but there were none. I did get to appreciate the smell…..I have used some morphine during some surgeries, never any cocaine, but like the rats its Oreos for me…Pete

The article in the Albuquerque Journal shows how stupid some writers in the mainstream Media really are. They have too much education for their own good. Cookies of any kind are not addictive any more than any kind of food, which is essential to life, is addictive. Nicotine, whether obtained from natural cigarettes or the electronic version is addictive because nicotine is not food. It is not essential to life. Neither are cocaine and morphine essential to life except as drugs prescribed by a physician to relieve pain. These drugs are not essential to the maintenance of life as food. Oreo cookies are food. Sugar, at least natural sugar, that we chemists identify with the formula C6H12O6 (hexoses), all of its optical homologues, and higher molecular weight dimers (sucrose) are fuel for the body and energy for growth and muscle movement. These sugars are essential to life; therefore, they are not addictive. Each person must control his/her intake of them into the body as a car engine must control its intake of gasoline into its engine, else it will become flooded, obese, and die a quick death, but an engine as well as a person must be smart enough to eat only the fuel that it(or he/she) needs without overeating, over-indulging, sputtering, and dying. In short, sugar and sugar products are food and fuel, providing energy and building blocks for the body. They are not addictive. Only the mentally weak and lazy individuals unwilling to move and to work think so. I will send this comment directly to Ms. Megan.
Essential amino acids are “essential” not because they are more important to life than the others, but because the body does not synthesize them. They must be present in the diet or they will not be present in the body. In addition, the amino acids arginine , cysteine , glycine , glutamine , histidine , proline , serine and tyrosine are considered conditionally essential, meaning they are not normally required in the diet, but must be supplied exogenously to specific populations that do not synthesize them in adequate amounts.
That’s exactly what I was going to say, Betsy, and you beat me to it. Thank you for coming by and thanks for some excellence information. Now folks, I don’t really know what the heck she just said, but it did seem important and it was well written…..Pete
To Errol, on your comments: You have quit preaching and have gone to meddling…..Pete
This world needs lots of preaching. Barry Obama and his minions do enough meddling for all of us. To Ms. Livingston: amino acids are essential for the body to build proteins, and it must get those essential amino acids from food; however, it must have fuel (sugars) in order to have the energy to build those proteins. Any dumb chemist knows that any exothermic reaction requires energy to make it go. Without fuel, everything stops. Just try it with your car. With a car, you can just get out and walk. Try it with your body, and you’re dead. It all comes down to controlling one’s intake. I will still take those Oreo cookies occasionally because they make life worthwhile.
On a side note, the one effect that always occurred when our sheep were given an LD50 (lethal) dose of radiation is that the animal always became sick, and it stopped eating. After that, many side effects began to occur, like a metabolic inbalance of its blood chemistry, electrolyte inbalance, after which death very soon occurred. After the initial sickness and loss of appetite, the radiation quickly became a side issue. The secret to long life is in maintaining balance in the intake of food and the secretion of waste, otherwise we die on the potty trying to remove the waste, like Elphis Prestley.
Let’s not forget the original issue here, which was the meddling of Ms. Megan trying to indicate that Oreo cookies were addictive. This is ridiculous. Food and fuel can never be addictive whether we under eat or overeat. Some are better able to maintain balance than others. A little work thrown into the mix never hurts. In the early 20th century, one seldom saw an obese person. Why is that? It is because people had to work for a living, and they sometimes had only a little to eat. In the 21st century, one seldom sees a person with a “twiggy” build. Why is that? It is not because they over eat, or eat too many Oreo cookies. It is because they are under worked, under exercised, and ride around in their fancy cars too much. One can’t maintain balance while sitting in an easy chair chasing a mouse around a 6″ x 6″ pad. One seldom see kids out in the pasture after school playing touch football because they are inside chasing that little mouse around a 6″ x 6″ pad.
Goodness, Errol, lighten up some. All this stuff seems to be working on you. Get yourself a package of Oreo cookies, tune into a Arkansas Razorback football game , eat the whole package of Oreos with about a gallon of milk and sleep through the last half of the ball game. Awake refreshed, full and completely rested, but I must warn you, watch out for them dang rats…….
