Television commericals

Most of the time folks are lucky to get a year or two out of their TV Commericals. I spoke to a lady today who told me her son was in a commerical which had been made back in 1986. We watched the commerical air, March 1, 2010. Her son, Kevin Hall and several of his cowboy buddies made the commerical for Roswell Meat Market, Roswell, NM, way back yonder and it is still in use and is a good commerical. Kevin is now all grown up, has a family of his own and is working on a spread over around Post, TX. Most tv commericals are lucky to run a half a dozen times…Here is this one still running from the eighties…This one may be a record…I asked Kevin’s Mom if he made any money off the commerical…Well,  she thought he may have gotten a bag of beef jerky out of it…That’s a good story and I would like to thank Mrs. Hall for telling me about it….Pete Hester

Shamu, the killer whale

We all hated to hear of the death of the trainer of the killer whale….One thing that has always worried me about working with animals is that they are animals..Holding something in its mouth is one way for it to show affection and to be playful with its owner….I believe this whale loved its trainer and wanted to play, nothing more…But on the other hand, many animals can turn on you in a second, dogs attacking children they normally play with, and attacking owners that have been loving them for years and we really have no way of knowing it’s motive(well, duh)…I would appeal to all animal lovers to love and take care of their pets, but don’t leave small children unattended around them…Just a word of caution as most of the time they will be ok, but, be safe, ok?…….

I ran across a picture of my brother Samuel E. Hester and my dad, Daniel W. Hester, given to me by a cousin last year. I wanted to share them with you….They are Pickens County Alabama born and raised….Born there….lived there….buried there….And I loved them both dearly…Sam’s family own several acres of the original homestead of Middleton Hester’s from about 1855….double click on the picture to increase its size…..

Rio Grande Silvery Minnow

Well, our silvery minnow is back in the news. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife has revised it’s recovery plans for the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow. It does not say what the revision is. But you remember me talking about Texas needing it’s water released from New Mexico to flow on down toward El Paso and beyond. Well, my thinking is now that the silvery minnow has the water to survive now because  Texas is getting it’s water. So, as long as we keep the water flowing the little fella’s will be ok…..Now, why did we not think of that before….Them little critters need water….Duh…I guess them Texas fellas do too…I’m glad we got it all worked out….

More stuff…

I have heard honking, high up, for several days now. I guess the cloud cover has hidden the migrating geese from me…signs of spring, huh….and that’s good…a new beginning…..Update….Feb 18, 2010 numbers from the wildlife folks shows the number of birds to be way under the last report….Gone up north to see our northern neighbors….I suppose they will be back in record numbers next winter after all that partying up north….

Carlsbad was voted some money to work on the new cavern at the south end of the city. I hope they can patch it up…Reckon what they will do? Pump brine water back into the cavity? Make more caves to explore? ….Now that’s a joke folks so don’t jump on me, ok? Really, how do you fill a major hole like that….Stuff 2.5 million dollar bills down the hole? Let’s see, there are 100 pennies in a dollar, so 2.5 million dollar in pennies, now that would be, geez, these dang cheap calculators….Well, its a bunch, so it might fill the hole’….Ok, I’ll be quiet…but let me know how they will fill that dang hole, ok?

Visitors have been down a little lately. I suppose the writer of this blog needs to do a little more work on something worth while to write about. Everybody is talking a tea party…Well, I was not invited to the first tea party, so I probably will not attend this one and I sure don’t want to write about it. But I am very sure I will hear about it….I am a conservative and I vote that way, but I don’t like to get out and mix it up and carry on publicly…It just ain’t me…But I will vote my mind and stand for what I believe and listen to what you have to say…More than two paragraphs though and you lose me…ADD I guess….

New Mexico Lobo’s , 25 – 3…squeeked by Air Force…but a win is a win, huh? those boys in blue used all of the clock everytime they went on offense. We won, but I will not get my 4 tacos for a dollar at Taco Bell since we did not score 65 or more points…Now that’s a shame and Air Force is to blame…So Tuesday, between 4 and 6 pm, I will have to pay regular price for my tacos at Taco Bell…Colorado State next Tuesday for the Lobo’s….In the pit….No, they are playing at Colorado State….Feb 24 update:  We won…We are now 26 – 3 and rated number 10 nationally…Pretty good, huh?…Only thing about being rated, everyone wants to knock you out of the ratings and sometimes just to say “we beat a ranked team”….Anyway, Go Lobo’s…….

South Carolina: Gold and Silver coins

Posted by Pete | Posted in News | Posted on 19-02-2010

By golly did you read about this new idea.  I  think the official from South Carolina may have come up with something. Pay for everything in either gold or silver coins. The transportation industry will make a mint. Say, you have a house payment of 1080.21 cents, which you owe to a mortgage company in California. You will have to mail or ups or fed ex or hire a common carrier to haul the cash out to California. The transportation company, not wanting the exposure of hauling all that cash unprotected will have to hire guards to protect the cash, riding shotgun if you will, creating jobs there…. Exploration and mining of gold and silver will have to be increased to handle the new coinage we will need, creating more jobs. Refineries will need to be built. Mining equipment will need to be manufactured to handle the new demand. More and more jobs..That may be the answer…But I have trouble keeping my pants up now as they keep slipping down on my belly, so envision me on the way to the grocery store to buy two sacks of groceries, say 85.00, all in coins and me holding on to my pants to keep them up under all that weight.. I’ll be ok until I get into the store and I have to turn loose my pants to get items from the shelves and down goes my pants. The lady behind me sees me with my pants down and screams, I drop the jar of jelly, which breaks, sending glass and jelly  all over the asile. I grap my pants and try to run with all the coins in my pockets, trip and fall, grabbing for the lady’s cart to remain upright and it falls, spilling the  four hundred dollars she has  in coins in her purse. The manager calls the police stating he has a robbery in progress and the police handcuff me……hey, forget the dang coins….that ain’t a good idea…it”s a terrible idea….

No. 12 New Mexico Lobo’s

How ’bout them Lobo’s?  24 – 3….No. 12 ranked….When they are hot they are amazing. Lately they have been hot…So has a couple of other teams in the Mountain West. We are excited about, New Mexico, BYU, UNLV and San Diego State….All of them are tough,… tough enough to be invited to the big dance? I really think three of them are and maybe all four…There is probably a valid reason that folks like me don’t get to vote ’cause I would vote for all four…We will see, huh?

Rommel, Erwin 1891 – 1944 The Desert Fox

Posted by Pete | Posted in News | Posted on 16-02-2010

General Rommel, also known as “the desert fox” because of his victories with the Afrika Korps, was one of the top Generals in Hitlers army. Rommel had a brilliant career with his tank corp in  Libya. In 1942, he was reassigned to France for Duty.  And Rommel was  made commander in Northern France in 1944. In  his first visit back to Germany since all the bombing had taken place he found his homeland in disarray, no supplies, everything bombed out and in lack of any type home life, Rommel could see that the end was near. Many were upset with Hitler and wanted him removed from office in some manner. While  Rommel was certainly upset with Hitler and Hitler’s killing of the Jews, which he claimed to have not known about, it is not known if he was a party to the plot to remove Hitler from office. But because of his defeatist attitude, he was believed by Hitler to have been party to the plot. After the plot was attempted and failed, he was wounded in a air raid and while convalescing at home he received a visit from the high command stating that they were giving him the opportunity to commit suicide because they believed he had been party to the overthrow plot. He was given the opportunity to take the poison and be given a state funeral with a statement made that it was death by natural causes. and his staff and family would be protected, otherwise they would also be eliminated. Hitler wanted the suicide to look like death by natural causes  to keep down further flair ups from military personnel. Field Marshall Rommel had the time (ten minutes) to advise his wife and son,who was home on leave from the war, the truth of his impending death and the offered protection and that for the protection to hold, they were to forever  remain quiet about the suicide. It was  reportedly a  fast acting drug and within seconds of ingesting  he was dead. After Hitler’s demise, the story of Rommel’s suicide was told……Since I brought up his name a while back I thought some of you might like to hear his story….Matter of fact, I had one request to tell the story, so there it is and as it is with a lot of war stories, it is not very pretty, is it?…Pete

Rep. Karen Giannini

In an article in this morning’s Albuquerque Journal by Thomas J. Cole, one in which he called Ms. Giannini, (a Democrat), an accidental legislator by virtue of spending only 635.00 in her election campaign and waking up the morning after the election and found that she had been elected. Me talking now….In her district there are all manner of people, democrats, republicans, good people, bad people, educated people and uneducated people that expect her to vote for the good of them all, but she must choose how to vote on bills….She did not vote on a tax hike, even though she was on the floor…She had been excused for a personal matter which she would not disclose…The article stated she opposed the gross receipts tax increase but she did not want to vote on it. And Ms. Giannini, me talking again, you have to take your stand, it’s who you are..You have to forget the back scratching and all the political stuff that goes on up there, you are you…Your values are your values….Now you stand up for them and vote..ok…that’s your job to vote on good bills, on bad bills, on pork bills….IT IS YOUR JOB, SO VOTE….

Nude Bikers???

According to this morning’s paper, the City of  Albuquerque would not issue a permit for bikers to ride nude through the city in some kind of parade or something. But, not to worry so says the founders of the ride. According to him, the City of Santa Fe will give them a permit, so they are planning on their ride through Santa Fe June 12. The paper stated that participants could wear as much or as little clothing as they choose to wear. I don’t know, you may want to mark your calender. Here lately I have been writing about nudist a lot, so I will probably keep you posted and I did buy me a bike late last year….Yeah, and my big belly is probably sexy…well, that may not be the correct adjective….big does fit…I feel sure I could get a few looks…ok, I’ll stop there….Well, after thinking about it a bit I don’t think I will ride nude in Santa Fe…A fella could get rear ended up there, reckon?…
