Warning…Warning…

I had to make a trip to the dump today,( which by the way has gone from 3.75 per load to 5.25 per load since my last trip there.) I got behind a gravel truck and he had a couple of signs posted on the back of his truck. Warning…stay at least 30 feet back…and then,  I am not responsible for broken windshields….I am not sure I could have read his sign from over 30 feet away and secondly, how can he say in advance that he is not responsible for broken windshields if the rock falls from someplace on his truck?  I was behind one gravel truck once on the interstate and I must have been 150 feet behind him…This rock came off the back of his truck, hit the payment and bounced several times heading directly for me…I was able to move over and let the rock go sailing by….That rock was lodged somewhere on his rig, came off, bounced down the interstate for a good ways and had it hit me he would not have been responsible (if he also had a sign…I never caught up to him because I was afraid another rock might come off). In El Paso, on the interstate in about four lanes of fast moving traffic, a 2 by 4 came off a construction flat bed truck and started splintering into large pieces,  flying all over the interstate scaring the crap out of everyone following the truck. Truckers have to be responsible for their load, including looking for lodged rocks and gravel. It takes a few minutes, but safety demands it. The interstate is too busy a place normally without having debris flying all over the place, causing drivers to dodge to miss it…..Come on truckers and pick up drivers, check your load…..

He did it again….He left us another present….Now they say, oops, the state budget deficit is 450 million, not the 250 million that we first thought….How do you mis-count that much money….I guess they don’t count money any more do they…Maybe they should…nothing should be spent that requires over a eight digit calculator and only a guy with limited math knowledge handling the treasury…..Some folks think they are to smart to get caught, and they are pretty slick, but when we do catch them its three or four years later and the damage is done…Us dumb guys wouldn’t try something like that and if we did, we would be caught right away….Sooooo, dumb down the money handlers and hire a bunch of watchers, one to watch the money guys and one to watch the watchers… Our new governor has her work cut out for her, huh?….. Thanks, Bill,…what part of the world are you off to now?

Albuquerque Police Department

We sleep well every night knowing we are protected by the APD. They do a good job in keeping us safe and free from break ins. Around my house I have a couple of firearms to give us additional protection if needed until the police arrive…..But that is some of my concern now because when police arrive at the scene of a crime, they don’t know you and they don’t know the criminal…So if I am armed when they arrive I am sure their weapons would be trained on me until the determination is made as to who is whom…..14 people have been shot by the APD in 2010, nine have died….The police have to make quick and immediate decisions as to what action to take….They want to go home to their families after the shift ends and not to the hospital or morgue….It’s tough making the right decision on the spur of the moment and I would err on the side of the good guy….You remember “Smoky and the Bandit”? One of the songs in the movie went something like, “I ain’t a gonna take no lip, with this six gun on my hip, let me tell you boy, this ain’t no toy”. I am sure hoping that our guys on the force never have that mentality when facing the perpetrator who just got into a fight with his wife or something along those lines. I don’t want anyone on our APD force injuried because he hesitated about the correct action to follow, however, I hope he will stay behind cover long enough to give the person time to drop his weapon and come to his senses….It is not easy I know…It is easy to sit here at this computer and make all kind of statements……I just hope our policemen know that when they pull that trigger, that’s it….negotiations are over…I hope they will stay under cover a couple of minutes longer and talk a little longer, it might make a difference…

Happy Veteran’s Day and some other stuff….

A big thank you to our veterans….We appreciate all you have done and are doing for us….We can rest easy and enjoy life here in America, thanks to you. We salute you.

The birds are back, along with the bird counters…I wonder how many people it takes to count these little creatures, when they are jumping all around…I can just see the counters shouting out, “stand still, dang it, jumping all around is messing me up”…..But, I guess they get the job done somehow cause here is what they are saying the count is for this year, as of Nov. 6th…23,557 ducks….Canada geese, 125…light geese, 13,080…sand hill cranes, 1,919….eagles, 1…American coot, 81…Marsh and water birds, 17…shorebirds, 16….gulls and terns, 105…hawks and owls, 10….There is a nice article in the Albuquerque Journal today telling about the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, just south of Socorro, NM…it states that while the refuge was built for birds, it has become a haven for a wide range of wildlife. Corn grown under contract for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service provide food for the sandhill crane, snow geese and Ross’s geese and about 350 different species of birds…..reptiles, amphibians, insects and about 30 kind of mammals are attracted to this area…Also, this year the aplomado falcon was seen by the vistors to the park. It is one of the rarest birds of prey to be found in New Mexico and has been formally declared “endangered”. Their attraction is the dragonflies….Coyotes, deer and elk have been seen in the refuge…The Return of the Sandhill Crane Celebration Weekend is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, Nov.  13 and 14 at the Albuquerque Open Space Vistors Center, 6500 Coors NW…for more info go to   www.cabq.gov/openspace/sandhillcranes.html

I went to that web site and its says it is not working…click on the ” Visiting” section and it will tell you about the return of the sandhill cranes, etc…Pete

Pete Hester….never published if you would like to entertain that aspect of it….could use a good screen writer also…..

I wanted to put a couple of chapters of my Bernie and Them book on the web site….Come to find out I don’t have the PDF conversion on my new e machine. No. 3 son told me of a free site for a pdf conversion, I did download it and converted those chapters to Adobe pdf and when I put them on the web site a block came up with a Abode Reader note with an OK block and when you click on the ok, it will go away but no story appears. I am not enough of a computer man to know what the heck to do at this point…..If and when I do get it figured out I may put all of Bernie and Them on the web site in installments. I know you guys can hardly wait…..But, really it is a pretty good story and if you guys have some time during the day or evening to read a chapter, well, heck, its cheap, clean and funny but  probably not at all educational…..maybe one of these days I will have it available for you…Pete

Susana Martinez, Governor of New Mexico

We have a new governor, a female, born in El Paso, lives in Las Cruces and educated at the University of Oklahoma….Yep, I voted for her…I kinda liked the way she talked…Reading about her in Ruben Navarrette’s column this morning left me feeling a little, oh, I don’t know how to describe it…I just thought of her as an American girl running for office…He says she is a Latino….I looked in Webster’s but it did not tell me what a Latino was….So, Ruben, should I be worried…Is she not 100% American….Well, I think she is and you are just giving her a name to boost your own ego, something like  “me too” crap…Because I am English, Irish, Scotch, oh yeah, with a little Choctaw Indian, what does that make me, a Europenochotoean. There are a whole bunch of folk around here that has a blood line longer than your arm….most of them are 100 % American….That’s what I am saying Mrs. Martinez is and I would be willing to bet that she gives the Mexican Flag and Mexican Government no more than common courtesy…She has already come down on issuing drivers licenses to non-residentsof the state and I think illegal residents will be dealt with severely. When you and the press hang a name like that on our governor it is almost like putting her on a guilt trip if she votes on anything other than the way you want her to….I am glad she is of Mexican descent. She is a lovely person. She can be a good governor and I think she will be and will  represent all the residents of the state of New Mexico, even us Europenochotoeans……

Rehabilitation: HealthSouth

A few weeks ago a friend fell and broke his hip and I guess his thigh bone as he had to have a pen down into his leg. He rehabilitated at HealthSouth. Last week, a friend of the family had a stroke and he chose HealthSouth. I visited with both of them while they were receiving therapy. HealthSouth is a good place…Friendly folks, good food and they push the patients to get on the road to recovery. No laying around for those folks and yet they seem to have the respect of all the patients there. They have the Rehabilitation Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Neuro-Psychology, Respiratory Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Dietary and Nutritional Counseling and a Case Manager for the patient and family. We had a meal one day last week and found the food to be very good. According to the HealthSouth’s web site they have over 1800 locations. Here at Albuquerque, they have really taken good care of both of these folks…I hope you or a family member never need rehabilation , but if you do I think it would be hard to beat HealthSouth…..Pete

Worst College Football Coaches (see footnote)

I goggled the worst college football coaches….I was kind of surprised the names that came up, and I am not saying I agree or disagree, but to name a few of those listed: Wannstedt, Pittsburg: Friedgen, Maryland: Stewart, West Virginia: Ron Zook, Illinois…….Now that name rings a bell….Let me see…..oh yeah, New Mexico hired his exciting offensive coordinator for the Lobos head coach two years ago….Well, I did not look up Zook’s record to see how many he games he won in his first two years as head coach but I happen to know Locksley’s……….one win and eighteen losses…..Man I hope our coach can turn things around soon…I wondered if anyone is considering replacing him?….Naw, probably not….New Mexico is a basketball school, huh?…….That’s what I have heard anyway… DID YOU SEE THE ILLINOIS MICHIGAN GAME SATURDAY? 67 to 65….triple overtime….Ron Zook’s team almost won that game….Now I am wondering about the goggle saying he was one of the worst coaches in America….best, good, sorry, worst…its all a matter of opinion, huh?…I don’t know how good Zook is, but he is certainly not the worst, this blogger just wants to correct that, ok?…Pete

Saying NO…

Posted by Pete | Posted in News | Posted on 30-10-2010

It has really been hard for me to say no at times…Especially if I really like someone and want to please them, but the older I get the more I realize that many times the best things to do is just say no…NO…..Some of our democratic friends up for elections need a no vote….Not all of them….Some of our republican friends need a no vote….Not all of them….It has become necessary for the voters to keep up with the way our elected officials are conducting themselves in Washington and in our state capitals….One term may be enough….I don’t know, they may just become corrupt quicker….Saying No to drugs and alcohol and smoking is really hard for our youth, thanks to TV and some of the programs going into the homes across America…What a mess, huh?….How will Mexico ever get out of the fix they are in because they have the drugs and the people across the border in America has the money and such a high demand for drugs….Saying NO has to be the answer…And as long as people can beg, borrow or steal money to pay for them, it will remain a problem….I used to have customers in Mexico in the 1990’s and went across the border several times a year to visit and entertain those customers….Now, there is no way I would go across. I would not have a problem saying, NO sir, to a boss who would ask me to go across the border today… Does anyone go across any more?….. And saying NO to unethical behavior in the work place and government jobs…I am sure some folks still are ethical, but one rotten apple really spoils the barrel…Pay to play…. what a hot game in New Mexico, probably most of the states have the same problem….We have to learn how to say NO to any rotten deal…It ain’t easy  being negative, well, it seems like negative, but no to all that bad crap, no is really a positive…can I get a AMEN on that?….I don’t know for sure what prompted this post tonight but I think it came from reading this morning’s paper and listening to today’s news…..Who was the lady that sang, “We sure could use, a little good news today.”…..We still can…
