Snowing Albuquerque 4/3/12

We probably had our very best snow of the year yesterday. It snowed all morning long, a good heavy snow. It did not stay on the ground long, but melted and our soil soaked it up. We still have some up in the mountains, the Sandia’s look sugar coated, but down in the valley and out on the west mesa, the drying process is starting all over again. It was good while it lasted, we sorely needed it and we already miss it. I think this will get the grass, and weeds, to growing and start our mowers going for the spring and summer. It’s ok…..I’m ready for some warm weather….and a little exercise…

Danny was born March 13, 1946, in Pampa to Louis Carl and Melba Reba Knoll. He passed away on March 30 after a 6½-year, courageous battle with cancer. He fought this battle without a complaint or asking “why.”

Danny was raised in Dozier and was a 1964 graduate of Samnorwood High School. He graduated from Clarendon Junior College in 1967. He married Brenda Pond on Sept. 9, 1966, in Kelton. He graduated from West Texas State University in 1970. Danny and Brenda settled and have lived in Amarillo since 1975. He worked for Diamond Shamrock, Taylor Petroleum, E-Z Serve and Coastal Transport Inc. at the time of his retirement on March 30.

Danny loved his Lord, family and friends. He was a very devoted husband of 45 years, dad and grandfather. He was a member of Saint Stephen United Methodist Church. He had a great love of horses and was a longtime member of Will Rogers Range Riders, where he was a past president and served as treasurer for many years.

Danny will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mack Knoll; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Teed and Helen Pond; and a sister-in-law, Linda Jaggard.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda of Amarillo; a daughter, Kimberly Crawford of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Caleb, Chance, Aubree and Caden; a brother, Carl Knoll and wife Connie of Shamrock; three sisters-in-law, Glenda Abernethy and Sharon Tillman, both of Canyon, and Donna Knoll of Amarillo; a brother-in-law, Harry Jaggard of Canyon; an uncle and aunt, Lawrence and Dorothy Whitley of Lubbock; 20 nieces and nephews who he loved and who loved him very much, Justin and Mandy Richardson, Cody and Amanda Richardson, Kelli Marr, Karla Thetford, Kyle and Heather Abernethy, Darrell and Terri McCabe, Derek and Angie West, Brad and Davina Jaggard, Jenifer Knoll Lees, Tracy and Amy Norwood, Mike and Lisa Pursley and Christine Knoll; and his special lifelong friends, Earl and Connie Feemster and family, Chad and Stephanie, and Eddie, Christy and Ian.

The family will receive guests from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to Saint Stephen United Methodist Church, 4600 S. Western St., Amarillo, TX 79109; Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, 1500 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or a favorite

Spring in New Mexico

Spring is here. Well, the calender says that spring is here. The temperatures do not. But, we have the wind to prove spring is here. Blowing dust. The hardest thing for a newcomer to get used to. Some folks can’t take it and move from New Mexico during this time of the year. We will have several bad days of blowing dust, cold wind and everything that is not securely affixed to the ground being blown away. Not a good time for one to visit New Mexico. But, it only last for a little while, thank goodness, and then it becomes a great place to live. Very little rain, very little humidity, very few insects and bugs, cool evenings and mornings and great people. If you are visiting this week, please hold on to everything you got…..its gonna get better, believe me, it gets better….Pete

My Cousin Larry, of Corpus Christ, TX, that I asked you guys to pray for did not make it. He passed away yesterday afternoon. What a nice guy and I am not saying that just cause he was kin folks. He was extremely personable.  All of his family, all of his cousins and all who knew him will miss him. We have had three reunions in Alabama in kinda of back to back years and most all of the cousins had made the reunions, renewing  relationships that had grown somewhat stagnated in the previous years. I had not seen Larry and some of the other cousins for years  until these get togethers. I am so glad we did have them. This is Larry and I together at the last reunion. (Larry is in the yellow shirt.) We want to extend our sympathies to his immediate family and to let them know they are in our prayers. If you go back in my posting to the picture of the early day cousins, Larry is the one holding the soccer ball. You can see the same nice smile in that picture as well. Great guy…. Services are pending at this time…..

Thompson’s Water Seal

Ok, I did find the clear, sprayable, Thompson’s Water Seal at Lowe’s. Remember to look at the clean up instructions. If you clean up with water you are getting a product that will remind you of Elmer’s Glue or white paint. And you cannot spray it with your weed/deck sprayer. It’s too thick. The Thompson’s I found is in the green/white can with instructions to clean up with mineral spirits and then use water….That is the one you want if you are going to use a sprayer. With that said, I got to go get after it while it is nice out….Later…Pete

Breaking and Planting My Garden

Number two son may regret moving to Albuquerque….Seems like everytime he comes over we find a ton of work for him to do. Yesterday he came over, with a load of compost that he had purchased for his yard and then he decided to give a few wheel barrow loads to me, but first we needed to dig up some turnip greens and turnips, get them ready for his mother to cook and get them out of the garden…Then, we needed to break up the garden spots, out front and in back, then we needed to turn the compost into the soil in both spots and then the soil looked so good and it was so nice out, we decided to go ahead and plant about 15 hills of potatoes and set out about 30 onion bulbs….He worked his bu…., he worked hard all morning and about the time Mom shouted out, dinner is ready, we were ready for dinner….Were those greens and turnips ever good. Mom also made some cornbread and fried up some ham and some condiments, along with some of her sweet tea….Yum, yum…..However, I am not sure his Mom’s good cooking will keep him coming back if I continue to work him that hard….All this is not exactly true as I have promised to come over to his house and piddle some also, but I don’t think my piddleing will ever equal to his working…Some of the work we did was his ideas yesterday though and I appreciate it. I was thinking after he left whatever  did I do before he moved up here….I don’t really know but somehow I made out, but I am thankful he is up here nowadays. He’s a good’un and thanks son….
